LINGO: REVISITED

On August 5, 2002, just shy of 15 years of the the original Lingo broadcast, Game Show Network debuted its new, up to date version of the series. This time, instead of getting the president's son to host the show, GSN got veteran host Chuck Woolery to host the show. (Assuming they decided on Woolery based on his sprint on Scrabble in the mid eighties may be the reason behind it). Along with the new series, brought a few rule changes, and of course, updated dollar amounts of possible winnings. (No more of those thrifty and small $250 prizes. Here, you can win up to $5000!)

The main difference is that the original series didn't use a "points" system. The player to get a Lingo on the board won the game and got to play the bonus round. However in this version, points are awarded. If a team correctly guesses a word, they earn 25 points. If a team got a lingo, they earned an additional 50 points. Also, instead of 7 numbers being used up on the gameboard at the start of a round, 10 are covered. This most likely was all done to help make the gameplay go a little faster than the original version.

At the beginning of the second round, along with the number balls and red balls in the vat, question marked balls were inserted into the vat. They are wild and can be placed anywhere on the lingo board. Also, point values are doubled in the second round, so a correctly guessed word is valued at fifty points, and a lingo on the board is worth one hundred points. The team with the most points at the end of round two, wins the game and gets the chance to play the bonus game. The losing team takes home parting gifts.

The bonus game also incured a few changes from the original. While the winning team stillhad to guess five letter words, the team had 2 minutes to guess as many words as they could. For each word they correctly identified, they recieved one hundred bucks and a single chance to pick a ball out of the vat in front of them. After the 2 minutes were up, the lingo card with the numbers on it appeared. Thirteen numbers were marked off, and you have to complete a lingo and get five numbers in a row. If a team did so before they ran out of the balls they earned in the pre-bonus game, they won additional cash and prizes valued at as much as five thousand dollars.

This revival is very good, and at least does the original show justice without making too many stupid changes that wouldn't matter. Lingo currently airs on GSN, Monday through Friday, at 10:00pm and 1:00am eastern time.
