SCRABBLE '93

On January 18, 1993, Scrabble would be revived on NBC for a short time. Going head to head with the show Scattergories with Dick Clark, as part of the "Board Game Morning", both would be cancelled on June 11, 1993, after 105 episodes.

The funny thing about the revival, is that even though it was so badly reguarded years later, the fact is, that there were no changes made to the revival. The show's gameplay was exactly the same. No lame changes, no "thrills". Just classic "Scrabble".

The only change that was made was how bonus money was handled. Instead of the pink and blue squares offering instant cash prizes, the money would go into a pot (starting at $1000), if they didn't answer right. If the contestant did answer the right word at that time, they won the money in the pot.

The reason that many people down the updated edition is because of the set changes. However I personally thought that the set was a lot better and nicely updated. (However, I would have definately kept the good 'ole "stop sign" stoppers instead of just the single neon light on the podium. That was lame.)

The revival also kept the bonus sprint at the end of the game, where the player that won could go on for the $5000+ bonus by doing the 2 words in 10 seconds. Even that was left untouched.

If you were to watch an episode of the revival alongside with an episode of the show Scattergories that I mentioned eariler, you would plainly see that both shows were done by Grundy. They both had the same style of set and the same computerized lettering on the shows. It's kinda funny in a strange way that both game show series lasted the same number of episodes.

The 1993 version of Scrabble has yet to be rerun anywhere. Neither USA nor GSN has every aired an episode of this revival.
